Assessment
Before commencing training, Excel will ask you to take a two hour assessment. This assessment costs £50.00 + vat and will help you decide if this is a suitable career before spending money on training and help us to ensure you have the potential to pass all three tests, which would enable you to go on and become an Approved Driving Instructor.
The assessment consist of 50 questions, based on the Highway Code, taken in our classroom. This is followed by a driving test conducted by one of our Senior Instructors. During the drive the Instructor will employ ‘role play’ techniques to assess your suitability. It will be conducted in a safe environment using one of the Driving Centre cars.
Part 1: Theory Test and Part 2: Driving Test
Training for Parts 1 and 2 is run simultaneously and consists of 20 hours of both in-car tuition and classroom theory training covering all the aspects required for both tests. The training is usually done in two hour weekly sessions with the final three hours consisting of a mock driving test at Southampton or Guildford.
Part 3: Ability to Teach
The ability to teach will depend on self confidence. All training is conducted on a one-to-one basis with a qualified instructor using pre-set lesson plans as laid down by the Driving Standards Agency in both in-car and classroom environment. Training is designed to build confidence and ability and consists of 20 hours tuition. On completion of 40 hours training a Trainee Licence can be applied for.
Trainee Licence
Once you have passed your part 2 driving test you are invited to apply for a trainee licence. This is valid for 6 months and it entitles you to start teaching as a (PDI) Partly Trained Driving Instructor and enables you to earn money while training and recoup your training fees. Please note that at this point you will need a car with dual controls. You will not need a car before this stage.
